The term '996 culture' is used. It refers to a culture where working from 9am to 9pm, six days a week, is the ideal way of working. A similar spirit remains in parts of Silicon Valley. However, this seems to be in direct contradiction to the objectives of AI.
The promise of AI was supposedly to 'free humans from labour'. People who used to work 10 hours to achieve 10 results, With the help of AI, they could achieve the same results by working one. Now, however, they are expected to achieve 150 results while working 10. It was not human respiration that AI accelerated, but rotational speed.
I don't blame young people for dreaming of rewards and future assets. Challenges are beautiful. However, that way of working does not promise returns for everyone. In fact, when I used to work in a property fund, it was '6-12-7'. I worked from 6am to 12pm, seven days a week. I was paid well, but most of my colleagues quit. My health was failing and there was no guarantee of another path.
Yet the same structure is taking root in IT start-ups. Not everyone can be a success. But in a society that puts away those who fail with 'self-responsibility', This system will fail somewhere down the line.
It is not a glitch that AI has created. It is a **structural bug** resulting from the god-like worship of productivity by the humans who use AI. And the patches to fix them can only be written by humans. The safety net - both mental and material - has to be put in place. I think putting that in place is what 'updating' really means.
